Anne Rice (1941 - 2021)

Anne Rice. Irish American treasure. Thank you for your work — the spirit, humor, sex, charm, pathos, meditations on grief — for your soul-searching journey into theology and back. Thank you for all of it. May you reunite with your beloved Michele & Stan and your work live forever.

Pete Buttigieg take on abortion goes viral

While the clip is from the 2019 Democratic campaign trail, former South Bend, Indiana mayor Pete Buttigieg’s response to a question about late-term abortion went viral over the weekend. Fox News reporter Chris Wallace posed the question during a town hall event in New Hampshire. I’m posting about it here because it’s a nuanced and well-articulated take from a pro-choice person of faith that is often absent in the public conversations about the divisive issue.

Nick Cave on the question of God.

Nick Cave has an incredible website, called The Red Hand, where he answers questions from fans, with depth, sincerity, and cleverness. I was delighted to learn tonight that he has written at some length about the question of God, which comes up very often amongst his fans. It’s all worth the read (and it’s not that long), but this is the part that struck me the most and happens to describe the space my heart and head most often inhabit.

I was delighted to learn tonight that he has written at some length about the question of God, which comes up very often amongst his fans. It’s all worth the read (and it’s not that long), but this is the part that struck me the most, and happens to describe the space my heart and head most often inhabit:

“Does God exist? I don’t have any evidence either way, but I am not sure that is the right question,” he writes. “For me, the question is what it means to believe. The thing is, against all my better judgement, I find it impossible not to believe, or at the very least not to be engaged in the inquiry of such a thing, which in a way is the same thing. My life is dominated by the notion of God, whether it is His presence or His absence. I am a believer – in both God’s presence and His absence. I am a believer in the inquiry itself, more so than the result of that inquiry. As an extension of this belief, my songs are questions, rarely answers.”

"The music that really turns me on is either running toward God or away from God. Both recognize the pivot, that God is at the center of the jaunt." - Bono, 2005

What Did Jesus Wear?

We may imagine Jesus in long robes with baggy sleeves, but this is far from how he would have dressed (via The Conversation).

We may imagine Jesus in long robes with baggy sleeves, but this is far from how he would have dressed. A pretty fascinating article by writer Joan Taylor over at The Conversation. Check it out here.
